The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight's game that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Greg Holland from Palm Beach (A) and optioned right-handed pitcher Mike Mayers to Memphis (AAA).

In the grand scheme of things, it's not uncommon for new relievers to arrive in April. The rhythm of modern roster churn begins sometimes as soon as teams head north. Games begin and bullpens become taxed. Temperatures drop and muscles tweak. Options become misnomers, used out of necessity.
