Cardinals Lose Allen Cordoba, Add Austin Wilson In Rule 5 Draft

A year after the Padres snagged a promising pitching prospect from the Cardinals in the Rule 5 Draft to assist in their rebuilding efforts, San Diego went after St. Louis' talent again. This time it was plucking infielder Allen Cordoba, who led the Appalachian League in batting average this past season and was ranked as the organization's 19th-best prospect in MLB Pipeline, with the third overall pick in the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday.

When the Cardinals had to make decisions about which prospects to add to the 40-man roster this winter, they took a calculated risk that a major-league team would not select a player who was still in rookie ball, knowing that to keep him he would have to remain on their major-league roster for all of next season.
