The Cardinals received strong performances from Enrique
Perez (2015 DSL Reliever of the Year), Wilfredo Pereira, Fabian Blanco, Brian Pirela, Angel Rondon, and Wilman Madera. Noel DeJesus, Francis Ventura, Edwar Ramirez,
and Winston Nicacio worked in a piggyback rotation. Blanco lead the way with strikeouts with
Perez, Periera, Pirela, and Rondon not far behind. Cristhian Lugo and Jesus Garcia, returning
from shoulder surgery, both struggled in the first month giving up quite a bit
of hits and runs, and issuing plenty of walks.

In the second month of the season, the bullpen took a
beating but Perez and Pirela, the lone pitching All-Star, staying on
course. Blanco tied for the lead in
strikeouts but also in walks. Madera and
Garcia managed to walk more than strikeouts.
Pirela only allowed one run over the entire month. Enmanuel Solano, signed in July, came right
in and made an impact.

Perez stayed consistent the entire season. Blanco has his best month of the season and
struck out the secon most and didn’t allow a run. Nicacio returned from injury and picked up a
role in the bullpen. Pirela dipped and
season-long stragglers Lugo, Estailin Tejada, and Madera had much better
performances. Solano showed some
improvement. Ventura and Junior Gonzalez saw
increase in relief as the season rolled on.

Perez and Pereira were pretty much consistent all season
long. One area Perez struggled in was
holding inherited runners on base.
Perez and Blanco both lead the
way in walks and strikeouts but Blanco scooted on ahead with more K’s than
innings pitched. Pirela, like Perez,
has his trouble with keeping the previous pitchers’ runners from scoring, but
still made a good push out of the bullpen and led the way in holds. Lugo had a sluggish first couple months and
came through in the end, was also perfect on holding runners on. Blanco also had the best WHIP and held
opponents batting average to .112, well below any other reliever. I have selected Fabian Blanco as the 2016
Dominican Summer League Cardinals Reliever of the Year.
