Junior Gonzalez
was the anchor of the rotation to begin the season. Alvaro
Seijas put in four starts before he was promoted stateside, but led the way
in strike out. Diego Cordero struggled in the first month, giving up the most runs
and second most walks but his strikes outs stayed on par with innings
tossed. Winston Nicacio and Noel
DeJesus had great starts to their season in the piggy back rotation. Edwar
Ramirez couldn’t get things going and was thumped but still struck out
almost as many batters as innings pitched.

Angel Rondon
bloomed in the second month and struck out more than any other pitcher in the
rotation, in July. DeJesus continued his
strong starting numbers from June into July.
Johan Oviedo, signed in July,
made a handful of openings and showed some promise. Gonzalez couldn’t continue his opening
performance and was tagged hard in the second month. Nicacio dealt with control issues and walked
almost as many innings logged. Ramirez
stayed consistant and the struggles flowed through midseason.

Ramirez turned things around in the final month and was
dominate on the hill, striking out the most in the starting rotation. DeJesus
and Oviedo continued their performances from the previous month and were
right behind Ramirez in strike out.
Cordero reappeared after injuries derailed his midseason and kept the
runners from scoring. Gonzalez improved
some while Nicacio and Rondon struggled to get back on track.

Looking at the overall numbers by the starters, DeJesus is
by far the best arm in the rotation and showed conistency throughout the 2016
season. Gonzalez and Nicacio were good
in the beginning and the year wore down on him.
Ramirez started off poor and rounded out the season on a strong
month. Cordero and Rondon were pretty
steady all season long. Oviedo was
limited in his innings pitched in each outing.
My clear choice for 2016 Dominican Summer League Cardinals Starting
Pitcher of the Year is Noel DeJesus.
