This past spring training, sitting under the scoreboard at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla., Matt Carpenter stressed his fondness for leadoff, for his No. 13 being the first Cardinal number to come up on the board above, and for having the daily chance to be the first run on it.
