With the loss of Matt Adams, the St. Louis Cardinals have been shorthanded at the first base position, relying heavily on Mark Reynolds to carry the load. Reynolds is a solid fielder, but is somewhat struggling at the plate, with a .229 batting average and 86 strikeouts. As the July 31st trade deadline approaches, there is talk of whether the Cardinals will pick up a left-handed hitting first baseman so they can move Reynolds to a more part time role. Just like Adams, a left-handed batter would make things harder on opposing pitchers. The lack of a solid backup for Reynolds could be a significant problem as he is forced to play more games.
