The last time the Mets and Cardinals met at this point in the season with both teams in first place was 2006, the year St. Louis defeated New York in a seven-game National League Championship Series on its way to the World Series title. The Mets haven't been back to October since, whereas the Cardinals have enjoyed playoff appearances in five of eight seasons since Adam Wainwright's curveball caught Carlos Beltran looking to shoot that '06 team toward immortality.
