The Nationals, seeking their third division title in four years, have been bedeviled by injuries and sloppy defense. Third baseman Anthony Rendon, who several scouts say is the Nationals’ best player, has been out with a left knee sprain since early in spring training. Jayson Werth has just returned after shoulder surgery and is hitting .130, and center fielder Denard Span missed most of the first two weeks before coming off the disabled list Sunday. Trusted reliever Craig Stammen may be out for the season after he has surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon.
