Jeff Luhnow Had Connection With Oscar Taveras

Oscar Taveras, the promising 22-year-old St. Louis Cardinals player who passed away along with his girlfriend in a car accident Sunday in the Dominican Republic, was signed by the Cardinals at a time Jeff Luhnow, now the Astros general manager, oversaw their scouting department.

As Cardinals beat writer Jenifer Langosch wrote in 2013, Luhnow went to the Dominican Republic in November 2008. Taveras was among the prospects Luhnow saw play, and Taveras immediately impressed.

Back home after the trip, Luhnow was worried about Taveras’ financial demands. Quickly, however, Luhnow felt there was only one choice he could make.
