The Cardinals had several arms that tied down the bullpen to begin the 2014 season in Juan Alvarez, Franyel Casadilla, Jose Lara, Andy De La Cruz, and Enrique Perez.  Alvarez and Casadilla both struck out quite a few and were able to keep their walks low.  Lara did a great job handling the close duties in turning five of six save opportunities.  De La Cruz and Perez pitched well in the long relief role when tandem starting pitching was not in use and also filled in as closers.  Esteban Vallejo and Jesus Narvaez both struggled to get going in the first month.

Lara and Perez struggled in the second month of the season as we saw Kerrion Bennett and Angel Estevez pick up more innings in the relief role.  The Redbirds tried using Vallejo, Casadilla, and Perez to finish out games but were only successful in two of six opportunities.  Alvarez kept eating away at the middle innings for a second month with De La Cruz continuing his pace from the start of the season.  The Cardinals also started using the piggyback system and starters like Will Changarotty, Oneiver Diaz, and Junior Gonzalez saw significant innings as relievers.

In the final month, Rigobert Urena stepped up to to become a much needed arm in the long reliever role.  Vellejo turned things around as De la Cruz slumped.  Alvarez, Bennett, and Estevez stayed on course as solid arms out of the bullpen.  Gonzalez made a fine transition from starter to reliever and Lara took back his closer title.

When looking at the final numbers, Alvarez, Casadilla, De La Cruz, and Lara were the strongest points to the Cardinals bullpen.  De La Cruz however didn't get put into too many stressful situations and when Casadilla did he blew the saves for losses.  Lara took a tumble in the middle of the season, playing a part in the Cardinals 5-16 record in July.  I have chosen Alvarez as the 2014 Dominican Summer League Cardinals Reliever of the Year.  He plowed through the most innings while striking out the most and keeping his walks down, and was able to handle some high pressure situations.
