The Cardinals opened the 2014 season with a rotation of Sandy Alcantara, Will Changarotty, Derian Gonzalez, Junior Gonzalez, and Angel Estevez. After a poor start by Estevez, Oca was inserted into the sole spot and flourished throughout the month. Oca, Alcantara, and D.Gonzalez were the strong points to the first month of the season in the starting rotation. J. Gonzalez was an innings eater but gave up the most hits and runs with Changarotty struggling after a couple strong starts.

The Redbirds rotation stayed the same at the beginning of the month of July but changes were on the horizon. Junior Fernandez was inserted into the rotation, after his signing on the 4th, and struggling hurlers were paired in tandem form. The piggyback system was set up combining Changarotty-Oneiver Diaz and J.Gonzalez-Estevez. Oca and D.Gonzalez stayed the strong arms of the rotation and Diaz thrust his way into the picture. Alcantara hit a speed bump after dealing with an injury and the club lost Narvaez at the end of the month.

The final month of the season saw the Cardinals stick with Oca, D.Gonzalez, Alcantara, and Fernandez as the main starters of the rotation. Franyel Casadilla was paired with Estevez and Changarotty took posession of his spot in the rotation after Diaz went down mid-August. J.Gonzalez was moved completely into the bullpen. Oca finished off the season just as good as when he began while Alcantara and D.Gonzalez faded. Changarotty showed some improvements after a poor mid-season.
I have chosen David Oca as the 2014 Dominican Summer League Cardinals Starting Pitcher of the Year. Once inserted into the rotation, after one relief appearance, he was the anchor for the team the struggled at certain points during the season. He lead all starters in ERA, starts, innings pitched, strikeouts, and WHIP. The Venezuelan left-hander struck out one per inning and kept his walks almost non-existent. Sandy Alcantara and Derian Gonzalez receive some consideration but an injury and slump after the All-Star game take them out of the running.
