Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 6-30-14

David Oca

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals opened this period up losing their first three games, winning one midweek, and losing the final two.  Ever since winning three straight mid-June, the team have only won four of their last 13 games.  The Redbirds are currently 10-15 with a .400 PCT and six games out of first place in the Boca Chica South Division.

Week In Review:

The Cardinals looked get a winning streak going to open the week against the Orioles (2) club.  David Oca had another solid start for the Redbirds, pitching six strong innings and allowing one hit, one unearned run, one walk, and striking out six.  The Orange Birds were also backed by strong pitching keeping the Cardinals to an equal three hits.  Luis Flores was able to put the Redbirds on the board in the bottom of the ninth to send the contest into extras.  After three more scoreless frames by both teams, the Orioles broke through in the 13th to win the game 2-1.

The Reds (2) visited in the second game of the week, first of the two-game series.  The Cardinals hitting was, again, almost not there.  The Reds held the Redbirds off the scoreboard for the first six frames until a sac fly by Joaquin De La Cruz knocked in Carlos Talavera.  The Cardinals final two pitchers held the Reds in check, but could not get the runs across the plate as the Reds won 5-3.

The Cardinals, looking to end the their two-game losing streak, went on the road for the second game against the Reds (2).  For a second game in a row, Reds pitching was dominant and shut-out the Cardinals.  Redbirds pitching was also strong with Sandy Alcantera and Esteban Vallejo striking out eight and allowing six hits and two runs in eight innings.  The Cardinals were limited to five hits, with two of those by Dennis Ortega.  The Reds pushed the Redbirds losing streak to three games, with a 2-0 victory.

The Cardinals visited the Red Sox in the first of two for the series.  Derian Gonzalez continued a great week of starting pitching by the Redbird starters going five innings and only allowing two hits and one run.  The Cardinals hitters also came back to life scoring four runs in the third and three in the fifth.  Carlos Rodriguez lead the way with a single, double, and two runs batted in, with Luis Flores and Jonathan Rivera chipping in a RBI each.  The Red Sox committed six errors giving way to the Redbirds offense and 7-6 win.

The Red Sox visited looking for revenge after a home loss to the Cardinals.  Redbirds starting pitcher Junior Gonzalez tossed five and a third innings allowing five hits and one earned run.  Cardinals hitting also struck first with four runs spread over the first three innings including Joaquin De La Cruz's first home run of the season.  The relievers took over for the Redbirds and folded letting the Sox not only get back in the game but take the lead and claim victory, 9-4.

The Giants came to town for the finale of the week against the Cardinals.  Errors became the major player in the game as starting pitcher David Oca had one of the Giants' four runs scored as earned.  Oca did strike out six.  Jonathan Rivera stayed hot racking up a couple extra base hits with a double and solo home run and drove in two runs.  The Cardinals took the lead in the fifth at 3-2, but the bullpen could not hold it as the Giants went on to win 4-3.
