Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 6-16-14

Sandy Alcantara

The Cardinals began this report right where they left off, extending their losing streak to five games.  The Redbirds turned it around mid-week to finish off taking three of four games.  The club is 7-6 on the season, with a .462 PCT, and three games out of first place in the Boca Chica South Division.

The Cardinals opened up this period, on the road, against the Giants.  Derian Gonzalez struck out a season-high six and kept the Giants off the board for the first three frames.  The Redbirds held a 4-0 lead heading into the fourth but things came undone with the fielding and bullpen.  The Giants tacked on nine runs in the final five innings and beat the Cardinals 9-5.

The Cardinals continued out on the road the Rockies for the second game of the week.  Junior Gonzalez gave the Redbirds a solid start, five innings.  The Cardinals took an early lead of 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second when a couple missed plays in the field caught up to the club.  The Rockies scored five runs over the middle five frames and held the Cardinals scoreless at the same time.  The Redbirds scored all three runs on solo homers by Allen Cordoba, Jonathan Rivera, and Henry Alvarado.

A Cardinals team, now on a five-game losing streak, arrived back home to host the Rockies in the second game of this series.  The Rockies came out of the dugout swinging plating three runs in the first inning.  The Redbirds came back to take the lead in the second scoring four runs including a two-run double by Oscar Cotes. The Rockies took the lead back in the fifth but in the bottom half coughed it back up as the Cardinals made a five-run march with Irving Wilson hitting a two-run shot.  Andy De La Cruz ended the game for the Redbirds pitching two scoreless innings and ending their losing streak with a 10-5 win.

The first-place Yankees (one) came to town for the beginning of a two-game series against the Cardinals.  Sandy Alcantara pitched his best start of the season holding the Yanks scoreless in the first five innings and only allowed two hits and four walks.  The Redbirds put one run on the board on each of the middle innings from third to sixth which included a solo home run by Luis Bandes.  The bullpen secured the win, despite a run-scoring error in the seventh, and won 4-1.

The Cardinals looked to start a winning streak in the second game of the series, on the road, against the Yankees.  The Redbirds were first to score, but the Yanks followed and took things to another level.  The Yankees scored seven runs in the first four innings, knocking around the Cardinals first two pitchers.  Oneiver Diaz managed to stop the bleeding for the Redbirds holding the Yankees to only one run in four innings.  The bats turned up the final four frames as Carlos Talavera and Luis Bandes lead the way driving in five runs combined.  The Cardinals swept the two-game series over the Yankees with a 9-8 come from behind victory.

The Cardinals stayed on the road for the final game of the week, versus the Mets (one).  The Redbirds struck first but the team's pitching fell apart in the fifth.  The Mets tacked on one run in the second and fourth innings then struck harder in the fifth with five to take a 7-1 lead over the Cardinals.  Dionenrys Pena hit a solo home run in the sixth and the Redbirds added another in the seventh.  The Mets bullpen held the Cardinals scoreless for the remainder of the game and ended the Redbirds winning streak.
