Every year, Major League Baseball holds two player drafts. Most fans are familiar with and have a basic understanding of the First-Year Player Draft, which occurs each June and deals with amateur players in the United States and Puerto Rico. But the Rule 5 Draft, which takes place in December and concerns professional players, is less understood.

Shortly after the Cardinals lost a minor-league free agent in the lower-level portions of this morning's Rule 5 draft, they promptly took a shortstop to fill a spot on the roster.

The Cardinals neither picked nor were plundered in the Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday. Rather, the organization's concentration of Rule 5 activity came during the Minor League phase.

The St. Louis Cardinals farm system on Thursday added two players in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft, but also lost three players: Right-handed reliever Kevin Thomas to the Twins, left-hander Hector Hernandez to the Diamondbacks and shortstop Jake Lemmerman to the Padres.
