Cardinals Deal Brendan Ryan For Hard-Throwing Maikel Cleto

Cardinals shortstop Brendan Ryan was almost certainly going somewhere, and finally he knows his destination: Seattle.
After a few weeks of exploring the market, the St. Louis Cardinals found a taker and apparently a reasonable return for shortstop Brendan Ryan.

The pitcher whom the St. Louis Cardinals acquired in Sunday’s Brendan Ryan trade to the Seattle Mariners has as fastball that sometimes threatens 100 mph.

Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said newly-acquired infielder Brendan Ryan will indeed compete for a starting infielder's job. Zduriencik won't come right out and say it, but the idea behind this move seems to be to find the placeholder for Dustin Ackley at second base before the M's are ready to bring their top prospect to the majors mid-summer.
A pair of offseason trades set the stage for the Cardinals-Mariners deal that landed shortstop Brendan Ryan in Seattle and high Class A flamethrower Maikel Cleto in the St. Louis organization.
After hearing his name mentioned in trade rumors for weeks, Brendan Ryan just wanted some sort of resolution. It came Sunday afternoon, when the Cardinals traded him to the Seattle Mariners for minor league pitcher Maikel Cleto.
