Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said he met privately with leadoff hitter and second baseman Skip Schumaker about removing the infielder from his usual spot atop the team’s lineup. La Russa is sliding second-year center fielder Colby Rasmus up to the leadoff spot for tonight’s game against Houston, and Schumaker, who is batting .219 in the leadoff spot, will slide down to No. 7.

Switch-hitting infielder Felipe Lopez took an expanded round of early batting practice this afternoon at Busch Stadium and then tested his ailing arm during a series of infield drills. Tuesday was the first day Lopez was cleared to begin hitting from both sides of plate and throwing, and both he and the St. Louis Cardinals expect the utility fielder’s imminent return to the lineup — as soon as his arm is ready.
