Mozeliak’s patient strategy of waiting for the price to drop certainly paid off. Lopez makes a lot of sense for the Cardinals for obvious reasons but he’s even a better fit given his contract. Lopez receives a base of $1 million and playing-time incentives can max the deal out to a reasonable $2.2 million. That leaves plenty of room for Mozeliak to make other maneuvers later, based on the Cardinals’ needs once the regular season gets underway.
