St. Louis holds a magic number of eight against the Cubs as the two teams meet for their final three games of 2009. Ted Lilly faces John Smoltz. Lilly is finishing up his best season in terms of ERA, but that’s mostly from great performances at Wrigley. He holds a 4.62 road ERA. Smoltz increased his strikeouts, and greatly decreased his walks and home runs allowed since moving from Boston to the Cardinals. The success of both Smoltz and Brad Penny makes one wonder how much easier it is to pitch in the National League.
