Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-12-09: Esteban Yan, Scott Spiezio, & D'Angelo Jimenez All Sign Deals; Scott Rolen Hits D.L.; Chris Lambert Optioned

Russell Branyan (Mariners):
Lost in all the Felix Hernandez angst, with Jack Zduriencik saying he had yet to open discussions on a long-term deal with the pitcher, is the fact the Mariners (in the same story link) have indicated they want to bring back first baseman Russell Branyan for the 2010 season. At first glance, a guy turning 34 in December doesn't seem an automatic extension candidate for what is essentially a rebuilding team.

Mark Mulder (Free Agent):
As for pitchers coming off injuries, such as Mark Mulder, or out of semi-retirement, such as Paul Byrd (signed by Boston), Melvin said, "It's hard to put all your eggs in one basket with a pitcher who hasn't pitched."

Esteban Yan (Marlins):
In other news, the Marlins signed former major league Esteban Yan and assigned him to Triple-A New Orleans. No word yet on whether Yan will work in the Zephyrs depleted rotation or head straight to the pen. Yan has not pitched in the majors since 2006, when he split the season between the Angels and Reds.

Veteran swingman Jeff Weaver will start Wednesday's game for the Dodgers in place of the injured Chad Billingsley, manager Joe Torre announced Tuesday.

Troy Percival (Rays):
Rays reliever Troy Percival hasn't filed retirement paperwork yet but said Tuesday he knows he physically can't handle pitching any longer.

Jamie Moyer did not answer questions about his demotion to the bullpen this afternoon at Wrigley Field, but he certainly spoke his mind.

Scott Spiezio (Orange County):
The Orange County Flyers signed Scott Spiezio to a deal to play in the independent Golden Baseball League, where he’ll join former major leaguers Damian Jackson, Robert Fick, Ben Johnson playing for manager Phil Nevin.

Max Scherzer (Diamondbacks):
Scherzer (7-6) allowed a pair of runs in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander did not allow a walk and struck out eight.

Scott Rolen (Reds):
Having played in only four games since being acquired by the Reds, third baseman Scott Rolen wanted anything but to go on the disabled list already. But head injuries rarely can follow timetables, and Cincinnati decided there was no other choice.

Mark Grudzielanek (Free Agent):
In mid-July, the Minnesota Twins signed 39-year-old Mark Grudzielanek to a Minor League contract with the hope that the veteran could help shore up the Twins' concern at second base.

Chris Lambert (Tigers):
Was Optioned back to Triple-A Toledo.

D'Angelo Jimenez (Newark):
Thge Newark Bears of the Atlantic League signed and activated him.

Zach Zuercher (Worecester):
The Worcester Tornadoes activated him from the disabled list.
