Ex-Cardinals Watch 7-17-09: Chris Perez Needs Surgery; Pat Corrales Back On Nats Bench; Jack Wilson Extentsion; Aaron Miles Begins Rehab Assignment

Braden Looper (Brewers):
Once again, Braden Looper can't complain about the offensive support he had in his favor. Given nine runs to work with, Looper did just enough to give the Brewers a 9-6 victory to start the second half of the season.

Jim Riggleman (Nationals MGR):
Jim Riggleman managed his first game for the Nationals on Thursday night, and it wasn't pretty, as they lost to the Cubs, 6-2.

Pat Corrales (Nationals Bench Coach):
A few hours after they promoted Jim Riggleman from bench coach to interim manager, the Nationals called Pat Corrales and asked him to return as the team's bench coach. He happily accepted.

Jamie Moyer (Phillies):
The crafty left-hander retired the first 12 batters he faced and saw his perfect game end with a Jorge Cantu single to lead off the fifth. The Marlins, however, wouldn't get much more than that. Moyer finished giving up just that one hit and one walk while striking out four in his seven scoreless frames.

Jack Wilson (Pirates):
The Pirates reportedly have approached both members of their double-play combination, shortstop Jack Wilson and second baseman Freddy Sanchez, about multiyear contract extensions in hopes of avoiding trading either one.

Dmitri Young (Nationals):
Assigned to Double-A Harrisburg for his rehab assignment.

Juan Acevedo (Monterrey):
The Sultanes de Monterrey of the Triple-A Mexican League placed him on the disabled list.

Chris Narevson (Brewers):
The Triple-A Nashville Sounds activated him after beign outrighted off the Brewers 40-man roster.

Aaron Miles (Cubs):
Assigned to Triple-A Iowa to begin rehab assignment.

Chris Perez (Indians):
Chris Perez, the relief pitcher the Indians received for Mark DeRosa before the All-Star break, will need surgery after the season to remove an extra bone in his left foot.
Cleveland Plain Dealer

Scott Rolen (Blue Jays):
The A's are attempting to move Matt Holliday, but if the Chicago White Sox put outfielder Jermaine Dye on the trade market, he'd be an ideal fit. Toronto third baseman Scott Rolen is the kind of player General Manager Brian Sabean loves, but he's owed $11 million next year.

David Eckstein (Padres):
And there's always interest in a veteran such as Eckstein or catcher Henry Blanco, although both are injured and also respected veteran presences in the clubhouse.
San Diego Union-Tribune

Coco Crisp (Royals):
Coco Crisp was brought in as the centerpiece of a major offseason overhaul to fill the Royals’ holes in center field and at the top of the order. Now, they essentially find themselves starting over.

General medical history is not optimistic about Crisp recovering fully from two labrum surgeries, so the Royals will almost certainly decline his $8 million option for 2010, despite having nobody in the minor-league system ready to play center field in the majors.
Kansas City Star

Russell Branyan (Mariners):
I just wanted to clarify what happened in the first inning when Russ Branyan hit one off the center-field wall but just trotted to second rather than run out a possible triple. Turns out he had been feeling back stiffness in batting practice, and tweaked it on the swing. He wasn't in his home run trot; he was limited in how hard he could run.
