Ex-Cardinals Watch 7-1-09: Javier Brito Signs Deal; Armando Carrasco Activated; Dmitri Young Moves Up; Angels Ask About Dan Haren

Dan Haren (Diamondbacks):
Diamondbacks right-hander Dan Haren would be an ideal fit for a team in need of an elite starting pitcher.

But, as the Angels recently discovered, the D-backs do not intend to trade Haren, who leads the National League in ERA.

D-backs starter Dan Haren tried to hide the smile as he jogged around the bases Tuesday against the Reds.

Terry Pendleton (Braves Coach):
Braves hitting coach Terry Pendleton knows what to look for when evaluating left-handed pitchers. After all, he played third base for Atlanta while 300-game winner Tom Glavine baffled hitters in the 1990s.

Felipe Lopez (Diamondbacks):
Once considered the Reds' shortstop of the future, Felipe Lopez sat in the visitor's dugout of Great American Ball Park on Tuesday.

Edgar Renteria (Giants):
Manager Bruce Bochy said that shortstop Edgar Renteria, who has been in and out of the No. 2 spot in the batting order, will continue to hit sixth or seventh as he has done recently. Bochy not only likes Renteria's run-producing potential from that portion of the order, but he also pointed out that the 33-year-old who has endured leg problems won't be asked to steal as much.

Ron Villone & Julian Tavarez (Nationals):
Based on games like Monday night -- when Olsen pitched seven innings of two-run ball but Ron Villone and Julian Tavarez gave the Marlins the win thereafter -- it's the kind of help the Nationals bullpen can certainly use.

David Eckstein (Padres):
Outfielder Tony Gwynn tied the game at 3 when he singled to score Venable and then advanced to second on the throw home. Eckstein drove in the go-ahead run with a single to score Gwynn. All three of the Padres' seventh-inning runs came off Houston reliever Chris Sampson (4-1).

Jack Wilson (Pirates):
"There are certain guys that you think are going to get traded," said Jack Wilson. "It's the ones who you think are a part of the future, those are the ones that get you. Those are the worst. The feeling in your stomach is ... it's something that just came out of nowhere."

Jason Marquis (Rockies):
Marquis completed one of the best pitching performances in Rockies history, a two-hitter for his third career shutout as the Rockies beat the Dodgers, 3-0, in front of 43,347. It was Colorado's second victory in 11 games against Los Angeles this season -- and both were with Marquis pitching.

Placido Polanco (Tigers):
Placido Polanco handed Detroit an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run to left in the first. He gave the Tigers an insurance run in the ninth, singling home Everett with one away.

Dmitri Young (Nationals):
Promoted from Rookie-Level GCL Nationals to Double-A Harrisburg on his rehab assignment travels.

Javier Brito (Grand Prairie):
The Grand Prairie Air Hogs of the American Association signed him to a contract for the 2009 season.

Armando Carrasco (Orange County):
The Orange County Flyers of the Golden Baseball League have activated him.

Jamie Quirk (Royals Broadcaster):
During the Royals' last home stand I reported a feature that will be appearing sometime this month about Fox Sports Kansas City's baseball coverage. So I got a chance to talk a bit with Jamie Quirk, the new cohost of the "Royals Live" pregame and postgame shows. Quirk was a 1972 first-round draft pick of the Royals (he played rookie ball in my hometown of Billings) and, before his current employment, was coach for the Colorado Rockies, which has come in handy doing armchair analysis of the Royals games.
