A frantic day of pitching-related moves has begun with the purchase of reliever Jess Todd’s contract from Triple-A Memphis. Todd, the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year as a starter in 2008, will be in the Cardinals bullpen tonight in the series finale against the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cardinals have designated reliever Blaine Boyer for assignment in order to make roster room for just-promoted reliever Jess Todd. The move falls the day after Boyer worked five innings in Wednesday’s 9-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

As the club readies to place Kyle Lohse on the disabled list with a right flexor tendon strain, Joel Pineiro completed a bullpen throw Thursday without incident and is projected for a Sunday start against the Colorado Rockies. Pineiro missed his regular turn Wednesday due to lower back spasms that plagued him last Saturday and Sunday, preventing him from even tossing a ball until Wednesday. Thursday’s session was Pineiro’s first off a mound since finding it difficult to rise from a chair Saturday afternoon.
