The Memphis Redbirds have placed left-handed pitcher Ian Ostlund on the 7-day disabled list with an undisclosed injury.
Ostlund, 30, was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals on November 19 to a minor league deal with an invite to major league spring training. He was originally selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 34th round of the 2001 amateur draft and spent the past five seasons slowly rising up through their farm system.
The Virginia Tech product along with Katsuhiko Maekawa, Charlie Manning, and Royce Ring were all being considered for a spot on the major league roster but were cut after the addition of Dennys Reyes to the club.
Ostlund has made seven appearances (one start) posting a 1-0 record and 6.48 ERA this year. He's allowed 21 hits, 12 earned runs, one home run, six walks, and struck out 15 over 16.2 innings.
He becomes the second left-handed pitcher (Maekawa) to hit the disabled list for the Pacific League team, that has already seen a number of players either receive a promotion or spend some time out of action with an injury, this young 2009 season.
