Chris Carpenter played catch on Monday for the first time since he sustained a left oblique muscle nearly three weeks ago, and he hopes to throw off a mound within the next six to eight days.

Sidelined since April 14 because of a torn left oblique muscle, St. Louis Cardinals righthander Chris Carpenter got the word from Dr. George Paletta to start playing catch today, which he did for about 10 minutes before tonight’s game here with the Philadelphia Phillies.
