Matt Clement Competing For Spot In Blue Jays Rotation

Clement is in the midst of a comeback from a serious right shoulder injury that has kept him off a big league mound since 2006. The right-hander has worked his way into the mix for one of the available jobs with the Jays this spring, but Ricciardi has said that Clement might be behind Richmond and Mills on the depth chart.

Considering Clement is signed to a Minor League contract, Toronto could send him to Triple-A Las Vegas without risking losing the pitcher. In that scenario, Clement could request to be released, but Ricciardi said he isn't sure if the Jays would agree to that move.

"He's contractually obligated," Ricciardi said. "He can't just walk away from a contract unless he retires. But, we'll see how he throws [on Sunday]. I don't know. We'd want to be fair, but if he's asking for his release, he's probably got a job somewhere else."

Keeping Clement in the fold would provide the Blue Jays with another veteran option, allowing the organization to possibly keep its prospects in the Minors until they are deemed ready for a big league promotion. Cecil, Mills and Romero are on the verge of being ready, but they don't have many career innings at Triple-A.
