Closer Watch: Hot Battles To Track

Cardinals
Incumbent:
Chris Perez.
Challenger: Jason Motte, Kyle McClellan.
The skinny: Perez has the strikeout numbers (9.1 K/9 ratio in 2008 ) to be a good closer, but he must cut down on the walks (1.34 WHIP) to keep the trust of Cardinals management. Motte probably has an even better fastball than Perez, but he doesn't have as much experience. McClellan is a wild card who could fill in if disaster strikes in the 'pen.
Our guess: Perez is named the closer before opening day because the Cardinals have been grooming him for this moment. But any sign of trouble and owners should jump on Motte.
