The top priority was finding a replacement at second base for free agent Orlando Hudson, whom the club was unable to re-sign due to financial limitations. The D-backs explored a number of different possibilities, including talking to the Cardinals about Adam Kennedy and making contract offers to free agents Ramon Vazquez and Mark Loretta.
When Vazquez and Loretta turned them down, the D-backs elected to spend a little more money and sign Felipe Lopez, a player that struggled during the first half of 2008 with the Nationals before catching fire after a trade to St. Louis.
