The St. Louis Cardinals trade RH starter Anthony Reyes to the Indians for RHP Luis Perdomo.
•Impact on the Cardinals: Although manager Tony La Russa denies any dispute between Reyes and Cardinals coaches about his pitching style, Reyes may have simply become expendable to St. Louis after struggling with his fastball and a 4.91 ERA in the big leagues.
In return for a player they may have been eager to discard, the Cardinals add Perdomo, 24, who was 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA while splitting time between the Indians' Class A and AA affiliates.
•Impact on the Indians: Unlike in the Blake and CC Sabathia trades, Cleveland acquires a more big-league-ready player than it gives up. After Reyes split time between the big leagues and Class AAA Memphis, where he went 2-3 with a 3.25 ERA in 11 starts, a new atmosphere might help him get back on track. As La Russa said, "I don't think there's anything objectionable to getting a fresh start."
