Optimism has faded into a combination of frustration, disillusionment, uncertainty and a bit of dark humor for Mark Mulder. The Cardinals left-hander no longer has any read on when, or whether, he'll be able to get his pitching shoulder into the position it needs to be in order for him to be an effective hurler again.

Before Cardinals team doctor George Paletta presented Mark Mulder the results Wednesday of another scan of the pitcher's vexing left shoulder, Mulder was prepared to walk away from more than the room.
