Pacific Coast League Preview

A hoard of baseball's best prospects will spend time in the PCL in 2008, from St. Louis' Colby Rasmus (No. 7 on MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects ranking) to San Diego's Chase Headley (No. 29). While they won't begin the year at the Triple-A level, Marlins outfielder Cameron Maybin (No. 3) and Dodgers southpaw Clayton Kershaw (No. 4) could be in line for short, cameo appearances in the coming months.

That's what the Redbirds are hoping fans will do this year if they can't make it to the ballpark. During the offseason, the club announced a newcomer to its broadcast team, Dave Woloshin. Already a member of WHBQ-650 AM, the Redbirds' flagship radio station, Woloshin will now handle play-by-play duties alongside color analyst Reggie Williams. The regular team of Steve Selby and Charlie Lea will take care of television broadcasts.

Redbirds add two to the roostMemphis also introduced two additions to their on-field staff, one from within the Cardinals organization and another from the International League. Blaise Ilsley will be the 2008 pitching coach after holding the same title the last three years with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals. He will take over for longtime pitching coach Dyar Miller. The second new coach will be Mark Budaska, who spent the last four seasons with the Pawtucket Red Sox. Chris Maloney will return as Redbirds manager this season.

3. Colby Rasmus, OF
Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals)

There isn't much that Rasmus doesn't do well -- so well, in fact, that you'd better catch him in Memphis sooner rather than later since there's a good chance he'll be in St. Louis before long. The former first-round pick, whose brother Cory shares the same distinction with Atlanta, had his third straight big season in '07, hitting .275 with 29 homers and 79 RBIs for Springfield in the Texas League. He also stole 18 bases, and though he whiffed 108 times, he drew 70 walks, which contributed mightily to his .381 OBP. He also led the Texas League with 93 runs and 69 extra-base hits. He hit .302 with three homers and nine RBIs in his first 43 at-bats with the Major League club this spring.
