Cardinals Vice President for Player Procurement Jeff Luhnow joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker Tuesday afternoon to talk about the young talent in camp this spring.
Things Discussed:
Josh Phelps & Amaury Marti impressive today(3-18-08) in spring camp play.
Was nervous about all the young talent in Major League Camp, didn't know how they would play.
Clayton Mortensen making an impact after being only drafted last year.
College players much more prepared than years before.
Plans were to start Clayton Mortensen at Palm Beach, but may get start at Springfield now.
Memphis Possible Rotation: Kyle McClellan, Mitch Boggs, Jaime Garcia, John Wasdin, Dewon Brazelton, Joe Rogers
Memphis Bullpen Arms: Chris Perez & Jason Motte
Springfield Possible Rotation: P.J. Walters, Adam Ottavino, Clayton Mortensen, Adam Daniels
No need to sign a bunch of 6 year Minor League veterans.
David Freese will start at Memphis & Allen Craig at Springfield.
Doesn't expect Colby Rasmus to struggle at Memphis.
Mark McCormick very incouraging return, fastball:92-96 mph, curveball: 79-80 mph, curveball sharp & around the strike zone. Exciting arm in the farm system.
Tyler Greene is expected to be everyday shortstop at Springfield, he's healthy, recovered well, & ready to go.
Jose Martinez has been working out with Memphis, guy they are looking at to be everyday shortstop at Memphis.
Pete Kozma has been working out with Quad Cities, plans were to start him out in the lower levels but Quad Cities wants him as their everyday shortstop. May also get a bump up to Palm Beach by the end of the year.
Jarrett Hoffpauir, Brendan Ryan, Jose Martinez, & Tyler Greene are at the high levels & should be able to contribute pretty soon.
Daniel Descalso doing well on his move to shortstop.
Bryan Anderson continues to develop as a catcher, but could play other positions. Plans are to start him at Springfield.
Luis De La Cruz looks ready to jump to Quad Cities.
Outfielders to watch: Jon Jay playing at Springfield, Shane Robinson & Luke Gorsett.
One guy to really keep an eye on is Tommy Pham, shortstop converted to centerfielder.
Fransisco Samuel fastball: 92-96 mph, slider 86 mph, very loose arm, possible closer at Quad Cities later in the year.
Matt Slater & Rob Fiddler handling scouting in Asian Market.
A..J. Van Slyke tearing up spring camp & smart base stealer.
