In May 2006, Jason Motte was a minor league catcher with a cannon for a right arm but hardly armed with a dangerous bat, what with a career .190 average.
But on Tuesday, 17 months after becoming a late-innings reliever and then serving this past season as Chris Perez's eighth-inning set-up man at Double-A Springfield, Motte landed on the St. Louis Cardinals' prestigious 40-man roster.
