While acknowledging that Tuesday's Winter Meetings work gave him a better feel for which right-handed-hitting first baseman may be a fit for the Cardinals' roster hole, general manager John Mozeliak also shed light on some internal candidates that could potentially address the need.

As the St. Louis Cardinals prepare to join the rest of the teams at the upcoming Winter Meetings on Sunday, there remains a relatively small list of immediate needs to be addressed–mainly a right-handed bat to compliment Matt Adams at first base. Prospect Xavier Scruggs put up another season of 20+ homeruns (his fifth consecutive) but seems better suited to continue playing as the everyday first baseman at Memphis, rather than the sporadic expectation of about 200 at-bats. Non-Tenders Who Should Be On The Cardinals' Radar

As the deadline to tender contracts to players not under guaranteed deals passed, the St. Louis Cardinals parted with utility infielder Daniel Descalso. With the depth the team has amassed in the range of backup infielders, the defending NL Central Champs could afford to let Descalso pursue employment elsewhere. On the other side of the coin, teams around the league have let go of players in similar situations who would likely not have a role on their former teams in 2015, or at least at the price arbitration would command for them.
