Miles Mikolas, All-Star, & The Scouting Process That Landed Him

Almost all of what the Cardinals saw of Miles Mikolas’ reinvention as a pitcher in Japan was the byte-sized view offered by video clips they played and replayed again on a laptop or tablet. What they knew of how tall he was, how he looked, how his hair flowed all came from numbers on a sheet or images bound by the four edges of a screen.

The route to a game at Roger Dean Stadium was a lot shorter when Miles Mikolas was a kid growing up in nearby Tequesta, Fla., but after a detour through Japan, he has found his way back to that ballpark.

Seung-Hwan Oh Is Logical Choice In Relief Of Trevor Rosenthal

There wasn’t enough data for Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak to truly know what to expect from reliever Seung Hwan Oh when he signed the Korean righthander in January. He concedes as much.

Cardinals In Asia: Seung-Hwan Oh Just First Step

Nick Longmire Better Prepared To Go Pro

Longmire said St. Louis scout Jeff Ishii called him while he was following the draft with his parents in La Mesa and asked if he'd be willing to sign. Longmire answered, "Yes."

"It feels unreal," Longmire said. "I'm so excited because they're a great organization and I've been on their radar for a long time. They want me to sign pretty quick."

The 21-year-old said Ishii and the Cardinals expressed interest in him in 2007 when he elected to attend Pacific despite being a 37th-round choice of the Oakland Athletics. Longmire said he expects the signing bonus to be around $150,000. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder said Tuesday's outcome vindicated his decision to attend college.

"It was the right decision for me," Longmire said. "I'm so much more ready now for (professional ball) and I have three years toward a (sports management) degree if it doesn't work out."
