Alex Reyes 'Electric' Stuff Enchants Cardinals, But His Command Will Decide Where, If He Starts

The heat can be broiling, the games long, the scoreboard parched, and that Florida State League crowd is often even thinner than the sunscreen feels, making the chore of charting pitches behind home plate unappetizing on most days.

Buy Stock In Yairo Munoz; Austin Gomber Makes His Pitch For Rotation; Worth Noting; Up Next

One of the more underrated competitions this spring is the battle for an infield utility spot. The Cardinals signed veteran Brad Miller to a one-year deal at the beginning of camp, and Tommy Edman figures to play six different positions this season. Yairo Muñoz and Edmundo Sosa are in the mix, and Max Schrock is also a candidate.

Van On Warning Track Disrupts Spring Game

It doesn't take long to figure out the atmosphere around Spring Training is more relaxed than a regular-season game. The stadiums are smaller. Players tend to come and go throughout any given game. A lot of fans watch the game from a blanket on the lawn. What's more relaxing than not even sitting in a seat at the ballpark? Spring Training is great and these are big reasons why.

Rick Ankiel Waves Off Any Comeback Thoughts Once & For All; Edmundo Sosa Makes Mark; Kwang-Hyun Kim, Genesis Cabrera To Start; Miles Mikolas Not Throwing

A promising Cardinals lefthander whose career as a pitcher went sideways, then suddenly a power-hitting outfielder and after that a prospective reliever trying to come back at age 40, Rick Ankiel finally is done with baseball. At least on a playing level.

Ryan Helsley's Progress; Paul Goldschmidt 'Trending In The Right Direction'; Worth Noting; Up Next

As the Cardinals begin to answer questions about their rotation and their bullpen, there are quite a few pitchers who they know can be effective in a starter’s role and a reliever’s role. Ryan Helsley is creeping up to the top of that list.

Jake Woodford Stays Prepared

He is not the blazer like Jordan Hicks or Alex Reyes. Or at the next level, Ryan Helsley. But Jake Woodford, a 22-year-old Tampa area product, may be the Cardinals’ next top pitching prospect, a righthander you don’t really know. Yet.

Yadier Molina's Grapefruit Timetable Firming Up; Live Look; Andrew Morales Sidelined Indefinitely; Worth Noting

The Cardinals have circled March 14 -- exactly two weeks before the club’s regular-season opener -- as their target date to have Yadier Molina catch his first Grapefruit League game of the season, manager Mike Shildt announced Monday. The club has intentionally slowed Molina’s schedule this spring in order to allow him additional time to recover from offseason knee surgery. Molina will be used as a designated hitter in spring games likely about a week before getting behind the plate.

An hour or so later, after he had seen three of the best arms in camp spin through their early-morning live batting practice sessions, manager Mike Shildt admitted that he watched from the outfield, saw the movement of pitches, and “was just cackling to myself.”
