Cardinals Instructional Camp News 1-12-18

Friday, January 12 was a day of transition for many of us. For St. Louis Cardinals minor league coaches, a new group had come in to Instructional Camp to replace others who had finished their one-week stint. For others, including farm director Gary LaRocque and me, the time was approaching to board airplanes to leave sunny Florida for the cold of St. Louis and the warmth of Winter Warm-Up.

Cardinals Instructs Features First-Rounders, Young Hurlers

The Cardinals took a chance when they decided to take Puerto Rican high school shortstop Delvin Perez with their first pick in the 2016 Draft, No. 23 overall. Yes, he was a top-notch talent, one who could have been a top 10 pick. But the news that came out pre-Draft about a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs put a huge question mark next to his name.

Jon Edwards Hitting 93 MPH In Instructional League

Green watched right-handed reliever Jon Edwards (flexor strain) pitch in an Instructional League game on Saturday. “He sat around 93 (mph),” Green said. “I don’t think it was the typical life I’ve seen on his slider, but he felt healthy, felt good. He’s supposed to throw one more time here Tuesday or Wednesday, and whether he goes to San Diego to throw after that, we’ll see.”
