Bernie Bytes 7-12-11: Albert Pujols Should Be In Arizona

Of course Albert Pujols should be playing in the 82nd annual All-Star Game. Despite the bumpy ride in the first half Pujols is still one of the best players in baseball. And the purpose is to win, right? At least that's what commissioner Bud Selig and the good folks at Fox Sports tell us.

Spitballing: The Future Is Now

Sample size or apple pies? You can choose only one. Apple pies—that’s what I thought. A quick glimpse of a prospect might not tell us all we need to know, but it’s still plenty tempting to draw possibly premature conclusions. With that in mind, I decided to watch the Futures Game for the second straight year and make snap judgments on every single pitcher, even though none of them threw more than a couple dozen pitches. Last year, my main takeaway was that Zach Britton was the man.

2011 Futures Game PitchF/X

Ah, the joys of the Futures Game and PITCHf/x. When All-Star week arrives, the kids gather in the host park and play a game. With a handful of exceptions, it's like a sudden wave of sneak previews—a quick look at a guy you haven't seen before and may not see again for a couple years, if ever.

Shelby Miller Shows His Stuff In Futures Game

Mitch and Stacy Miller of Brownwood, Texas, had planned to be at Chase Field here Sunday to watch their son, Shelby, the Cardinals' top draft pick in 2009 and top pitching prospect in the system, appear for the second year in succession at the All-Star Futures Game.

Best Fastball: Carlos Martinez

Best Fastball: There was plenty of heat at the Futures Game, with Moore touching 98 mph, Phillies righthander Jared Cosart and Braves righthander Arodys Vizcaino all making an impression on scouts. Yet for a pure fastball, it's hard to beat Cardinals righthander Carlos Martinez.

Shelby Miller's Dad Deals With Personal Matter

Shelby Miller pitched a strong inning in the U.S. Team's 6-4 win against the World Team in the XM All-Star Futures Game, but his father was not in attendance. Sadly, Mitch Miller had another responsibility to attend to.

Carlos Martinez Was Inspired By Grandmother

Carlos Martinez did not need to think hard to answer who dedicates everything he does on the baseball field.

Cardinals Prospects Shelby Miller, Carlos Martinez Show Off Stuff

The Cardinals have waited a long time to have a pair of pitchers such as the one they currently have in their Minor League system. Then again, a lot of teams have to wait a long time to come across two pitching prospects such as Shelby Miller and Carlos Martinez.
Carlos Martinez, 19, and Shelby Miller,20, the Cardinals' top two pitching prospects, both worked scoreless innings for their respective teams today in the All-Star Futures game, which showcases top minor leaguers.
Grant Green said he felt a lot more comfortable at this year's Futures Game after playing in last year's prospect all-star matchup. And it showed.

A Brief Conversation With Carlos Martinez

A little bit of this made it into my story on the Futures Game that will go up on Cardinals.com later today. But in addition, here’s a writeup of my brief chat with Carlos Martinez on the field this morning.

The Cardinals Starlin Rodriguez Is Rising

In rare cases, a baseball player with extraordinary talent becomes widely known by his first name only. If that given name is unusual, the chance increases of it becoming memorable.

Ten To Watch In The Futures Game

When Major League Baseball announced the Futures Game rosters Sunday, many of the usual suspects were there, including seven of the top 10 prospects from my May 31 ranking update: Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Julio Teheran, Shelby Miller, Martin Perez and Manny Machado. But the game also includes a number of prospects I haven't seen in a while or at all, including these 10 guys who head the list of Futures Game participants I'm most excited to see.
