A month ago, the St. Louis Cardinals took the field for the first time under a new manager in over six years. A storm ripped through the city the night before, washing Mike Matheny out of a job after a third consecutive season was sliding off the tracks towards eventual doom. In his place, bench Mike Shildt was promoted to interim manager with a team of ragtag parts that barely resembled something positive.
