A slugger’s aura. There’s just nothing like it in baseball. Sure, there are the dazzling shortstops and the dizzying pitchers, but there is nothing more mesmerizing than a baseball walloped. Old, proud pitchers — perhaps scrolling through this very column with sufficiently blistered fingers — might tell you that the strikeout is more mesmerizing. But for even the nastiest of curves and cutters, a strikeout’s accomplishment is, in effect, preventing someone from doing something big. A home run is the big.
