Late in the summer, shortly after he learned that closer Trevor Rosenthal would need elbow surgery and miss most of next season, Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch took stock of the holes, some obvious and some just sudden, that had to be filled on the roster. He listed a shutdown closer, a reliable starting pitcher and a middle-order hitter.
