Mark McGwire, an impending free agent in 1997, had to waive his 5-10 no-trade provision to come to the Cardinals in a July 31 swap with Oakland for three young pitchers. He did so because Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty told him that his “second dad,” manager Tony La Russa, really wanted him but McGwire made it clear to Jocketty that he was only a “rental” player and that he really wanted to play in his native Southern California after that season.
