The Cardinals’ 100-win season came to an abrupt end in 2015, with the ascendant Chicago Cubs clubbing the Cards out of the NLDS by smashing 10 homers over three consecutive wins that finished off the supposedly superior Cardinals. The Cubs’ conquest represented a stark shift in power. In 2016 the Cubs captured the NL Central, humiliating the Cardinals by a final margin of 17.5 games. The 86-win Cardinals failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2010. The Cubs won the World Series for the first time since 1908.
