First Inning Once Again Adam Wainwright's Only Issue

Adam Wainwright settled into a familiar pattern in the Cardinals' 6-4 win over the Pirates on Saturday. For his fourth start in a row, Wainwright struggled early and got stronger as the game went on.

Adam Wainwright’s slow, winding, and oft-frustrating route back to form in 2016 seemed to reach its conclusion in Saturday’s rematch with the Pirates. It just had to go through one more ugly inning.

Luckily for the Cardinals on Saturday, Pirates starter Jeff Locke couldn’t find his groove early, either, as he also allowed the first four batters to reach and gave up two runs on 33 first-inning pitches. It brought Wainwright and the Cardinals back to even.

Following the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, Manager Mike Matheny suggested Adam Wainwright “found something” that enabled the starter to lock in after the first couple innings of work.
