Four years ago, under another manager and employing a radically different roster, the Cardinals finished a previously frustrating season on a 19-8 rush while winning nine of 10 series. The reward was a skin-of-the-teeth, wild-card entry into the postseason and a walk-away World Series championship for Tony La Russa, pitching coach Dave Duncan and pending free agent first baseman Albert Pujols.
