Manager Chip Hale clearly ruled out Laird as the starting catcher, and cited his age at 35, and playing time as factor. Signed as to a minor league contract last month, Laird spent the majority of his 10-year major league as a back-up. His last “full-time” job was in 2009, when he caught 135 games for the Tigers.
