As they spoke often this winter, manager Mike Matheny told pitcher Carlos Martinez that he would have every opportunity to be a starter in the majors this season and that the team had cleared the way for him to win the job he wanted.

Mike Matheny made the obvious official after the Cardinals 6-2 win over the Nationals at Roger Dean Stadium. When the Cardinals open the season, it will be Carlos Martinez who joins Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, John Lackey and Michael Wacha in the starting rotation.
