When John Lackey threw his first pitches of Game 7 of the World Series in 2002, about to do what no rookie had done in more than 90 years, there was a sophomore in Indiana who tuned in and saw only possibilities. He had mechanics similar to Lackey, a build similar to Lackey, and though he was nine years younger he saw a fire in Lackey he wanted to kindle on the mound.
