Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday night that he still believed in his underachieving club, which started the day at 19-20. But he added a caveat.

With Tyler Lyons on the disabled list because of a left shoulder strain after he was roughed up for nine runs in four innings Monday and Eric Fornataro having worked extensively in relief after Lyons came out, the Cardinals called up lefthander Sam Freeman and righthander Jorge Rondon from Memphis. The latter had been brought up from Memphis earlier in the season but wasn’t used. At the same time Fornataro was optioned to Memphis.

The Mariners have to be practically giddy to reach this point in the season and be two games over .500. The Marlins and Mets, likewise, should be encouraged to be even .500. Heck, the Twins will gladly take 18-19 after all their recent losing seasons.
