Infielder Domino Affect Pushes Matt Williams Out Of Double-A Springfield Down To A-Advanced Palm Beach

Matt Williams has been reassigned from Double-A Springfield to A-Advanced Palm Beach with the domino affect of Pete Kozma being optioned out to Triple-A Memphis from St. Louis and Luis Mateo returning to Double-A Springfield, were he spent the 2013 season.

Williams, 24, was a 15th round (470th overall) selection by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2011 amateur draft out of Liberty University.  He is beginning his fourth season in the organization having spent time at Short-Season Rookie-Level Johnson City, Single-A Quad Cities, A-Advanced Palm Beach, and Double-A Springfield.  The right-handed hitting utility infielder (mainly shortstop) has played in 285 games going 280-for-1050 (.267) with 62 doubles, six triples, 15 home runs, 89 RBIs, 399 total bases, 180 runs, 109 walks, 55 stolen bases, 19 caught stealing, 181 strikeouts, .342 OBP, .380 SLG, and .722 OPS.

Currently this season, Williams has played in ten games going 7-for-31 (.226) with one double, two RBIs, eight total bases, four runs, seven walks, one caught stealing, nine strikeouts, .368 OBP, .258 SLG, and .626 OPS.  He has put together two multi-hit and two multi-walk games, including all four at-bats on April 6th, this season.
