Competition Breeds Success Off Bench

Last year for the St. Cardinals, there really weren’t too many mistakes made when it came to offseason acquisitions. The organization’s one glaring miscue, however, was obvious: Ty Wigginton. When general manager John Mozeliak signed Wigginton, it simply didn’t make sense. Wigginton was 35 years old, having already posted the best years of his career. He had lost the ability to be a starter and did not boast a successful track record off the bench. Great guy in the clubhouse, sure, but that All-Star appearance of 2010 seemed like eons ago.
